KTH Field of Specialization

Membrane Distillation Storage Unit Turbo Machinery

KTH, division of Heat and Power Technology (KTH/HPT) as a partner in SELECT+ represents advanced research in the area of sustainable energy conversion, through the many steps along a pathway from primary energy source to end-user’s demand for energy services. Our cutting-edge research ranges from fundamentals in energy conversion and thermal sciences to system studies on a regional and global level. Our experimental rigs in biomass gasification, combustion, and gas turbine aeromechanics have been recognized by the European Commission as major research infrastructures in both FP6 and FP7. Examples of presently running R&D topics are:

• Membrane distillation (MD) for desalination or ultrapure water production, with industrial and cogeneration applications. HPT is a partner with one of the main industrial players in MD, and houses two semi-commercial rigs.
• Development of efficient thermal energy storage strategies for peak shaving and matching of supply and demand in many important energy systems.
• Turbomachinery aeromechanics for ensuring safe, reliable, affordable and green energy and transport services for today’s and tomorrow’s society.
• Thermoeconomic optimization and development of advanced control strategies through dynamic simulations of Concentrating Solar Power systems
• Solar receiver design, optimisation and testing for small-scale Concentrated Solar Power based polygeneration units.
• KTH/HPT is the coordinator BRISK, a new FP7 research infrastructures project in the area of thermochemical conversion of biomass for second-generation biofuels.

The concept of Polygeneration is central in our activities – Polygeneration is about fuel flexibility in energy conversion processes while generating multiple energy services, with higher overall efficiency as a result.

As a SELECT+ PhD candidate with KTH as the home university, you will supplement our present research with a unique connection to a focused research effort through the Project of the Intake encompassing close to ten other PhD projects all over Europe. You will also, from Day 1 in your programme, have a research approach clearly focused on market introduction of your resulting innovations, as well as a deepened multidisciplinary approach through the mobility structure of SELECT+.
